No longer reaching for the moon

How often have you heard it said: "If we can send a man to the moon why can't we blankety blank"? Well, it turns out we can't send a man to the moon -- not anymore.

Maybe that explains why we can't blankety blank anymore either. Maybe we are simply an empire in decline, our powers wasted, our energies spent. We have the strength to shuffle papers, (less than competently in the case of financial assets), while the creation of tangible wealth falls to others more willing to do the work. We have been impulsively embarking on foolish wars of choice abroad while stupefying ourselves with mindless entertainments such as the incongruously named "reality programs" at home. We find excuses to avoid dealing with global warming and more excuses to look away from law breaking in the highest places. We have stopped being a serious people.
